The Phoenicia, Malta | UK WEDDING BLOG

By Laura

Well, where do I start? Our whistle-stop stay at The Phoenicia was simply magical. The weather may not have been what you would usually expect from a country that sits between Southern Italy and Northern Africa but it honestly didn’t matter. Destination weddings are becoming ever more popular and I have absolutely no hesitation throwing this beautiful hotel into the mix as a European front runner.

After waiting an hour on the plane before we actually took off, we arrived early on Wednesday morning to the smiling faces of our drivers who had come to collect us from the airport to make the 20-minute journey to the hotel. The short journey means you can literally step off the plane and be checked-in at the hotel within an hour; practically unheard of in most European cities! The Phoenicia is located right in the heart of Valletta, Malta’s beautiful capital city, and I personally couldn’t get enough of the area’s rich history and eclectic mix of Mediterranean/North African/British vibes.

The Phoenicia, a Campbell Gray Hotel and member of The Leading Hotels of the World, offers 5-star luxury within walking distance to the city’s best attractions. The hotel has glorious views of the Grand Harbour and the city’s skyline. Its 7.5 acres of mature gardens spread to the historic entrance of the capital, marked by ancient fortified walls.

All 136 of the luxury bedrooms and suites at The Phoenicia Malta have been carefully restored whilst retaining the fresh Mediterranean features, including the original tiled floors. I particularly loved the blue and white porcelain lamps that sat either side of the bed. Our room was light and airy with a petite balcony overlooking the harbour and city. The bathroom was filled with ‘The White Company’ miniatures and kitted out with all the overnight essentials in case you’ve forgotten anything!

To make the most of the sunlight, we headed straight to the pool which sits at the end of the beautifully curated gardens. The pool offers a modern contrast from the classic lines of the hotel featuring a more contemporary design, and provides the perfect spot to while away the day in the Mediterranean sunshine, surrounded by the ancient battlement walls of the city. There are changing rooms and a poolside bar so no need to walk through the entire hotel in your bikini! The bar offers a small seasonal menu too so you can nibble on some food whilst you soak up the rays. The infinity pool overlooks the Marsamxett Harbour and I was so pleased to hear that the pool area can be used for wedding receptions.

The Phoenicia were kind enough to offer us a complimentary dinner at the hotel’s restaurant The Phoenix and we were so impressed with the variety of the menu. I had the twice baked cheese soufflé to start, then lamb rump with sumac and moussaka whilst Fraser had the prawn risotto as his starter followed by beef fillet with onion farci (a filled onion with meat and herbs). We were honestly so full that for the first time in our entire relationship we shared a dessert opting for the apple crumble soufflé with crème anglais and vanilla ice cream. It.was.divine.

Thursday morning, the 4th April, was mine and Fraser’s 9-year anniversary and exactly a year until we tie the knot so it was already a special day, but The Phoenicia made it all the more momentous. As we meandered down toward The Phoenix to have breakfast, staff on reception stopped us to say ‘Happy anniversary!’ which was a) totally unexpected and b) so thoughtful that management had told the staff about it! There was so much to choose from for breakfast with sweet and savoury continental options and a hot station with all the trimmings for a full English breakfast and a pancake chef!

We then met with Chrystelle, the Wedding Coordinator for The Phoenicia who showed us all the different areas to get married in and there are so many options. She said that the majority of their couples are from overseas so they have carefully put together a package where they literally look after everything for you, you just have to turn up 3 days before to do all the legal paperwork. Of course, as with any wedding, they will liaise with you on every decision so you have full control over aspects such as your flowers and the playlist the band/DJ will play. They have an extensive suppliers list so you can choose them based on your style and theme. They give each couple a code to give to their guests for discounted room rates should they want to stay at the hotel for the wedding. Aside from the Bastion Pool which was my personal favourite, The Grand Ballroom offers a great alternative for an inside reception of up to 250 people seated.

We spent the day wandering the streets of Valletta and upon our return there was a knock on our door to two lovely porters with a bottle of prosecco and a cake! There was a sweet message from the Hotel Manager to wish us a happy anniversary. These little touches are what set The Phoenicia apart for us, and it is these moments that we will remember.

The Phoenicia thoroughly deserves its 5-star status and I was honestly so, so impressed with our short but sweet stay. They made me feel like some sort of celebrity so I can only imagine the level of service you would receive as a bride. If you’re simply looking for some mini-moon inspiration, then Malta is such a beautiful country to visit and The Phoenicia are currently offering a 15% discount on all stays over 2 nights up to the 20th December 2019 if you book through their website.
