Magic Mike Live | UK WEDDING BLOG

By Laura

My goodness, where do I start? Tuesday night was one of the best nights I have had in a really long time. I sent a text to Phoebe to thank her for hiring me because I get to do some pretty cool things working for So You’re Getting Married, but this trumped them all haha! I couldn’t believe my luck when an email dropped into my inbox asking if I would go along to watch Channing Tatum’s Magic Mike Live at the London Hippodrome with a friend. Well of course I jumped at the chance, she must have been a bit shocked at how quickly I replied. Cue a few of my friends battling as to who would be the gracious receiver of the second ticket and when the winner was finally chosen she was equally as excited (despite the fact that we are both in serious, long term relationships!).

We didn’t realise until we turned up that we were actually attending a VIP night and we were swiftly given a wristband so we could enjoy pre show drinks. I immediately spotted Love Island’s Curtis Pritchard and his Strictly Come Dancing professional dancer brother, AJ. In walks Megan Barton-Hanson from last year’s Love Island, Radio 1 DJ Clara Amfo and even TV personality and broadcaster Vanessa Feltz. An eclectic mix of celebs and even more weird for me that I had been invited in the first place!

It was time to take our seats and we were lucky enough to have been seated on one of the premium tables, literally inches from the stage. The usher who showed us to our seats left us with this sentence ‘well, welcome to Magic Mike Live, you are sitting on a very special table and something very special will happen to you’. I mean, I nearly lost my head when he said that. We had a few minutes to gather ourselves, which I spent looking around to see what type of crowd we were part of. Inevitably, the audience was 95% women (of all ages) although the odd male could be seen dotted around the 300-odd seater theatre.

The lights dimmed and I heard a voice that initially I thought was a recording, but I turned around to see ACTUAL CHANNING TATUM introducing the show! Apparently, this was a rare occurrence so how jammy were we to be able to say he was there! The show opens with 5 of the cast dressed (yes, clothes ON) as some sort of YMCA tribute act and I had a moment of ‘oh god what are we about to watch?’ but don’t worry, it was all a ruse. We spent the next 90 minutes whooping and hollering at the top of our lungs at the incredibly good looking, 14 strong cast of ripped men who danced their way through all of the screams. I don’t want to give too much away because it really is a fantastic evening, but there is a loose narrative with lots of little surprises here and there. Be warned, you almost certainly will be involved in the show even if you’re sat in the upper tier, but don’t worry – you will enjoy it, trust me. Following the show we had some after show drinks with a handful of the dancers, CHANNING TATUM (sorry but he deserves the capitals) and the celebs.

If it is your kind of thing (it is definitely mine), the Magic Mike Live show is the PERFECT hen party idea. They welcome groups of raucous ladies, there is audience participation and men to ogle at – what could be better?! Don’t tell Fraser, but I asked Lois, one of my bridesmaids and the friend I took along, to see if she can hire one of them to come to my own hen! A particular highlight of the show was the sexy duet that was danced as it rained from the top of the stage.

If you’d like a bit more of a visual representation of what I’ve just described, here is a video I took (there are more saved on the @soyouregettingmarried highlights). WARNING: it includes some partial nudity and a lot of me screaming 😉

I know this isn’t what you would usually read or see on SYGM but honestly it is such a good night out that is both empowering and exhilarating. I must also mention that aside from their impeccable ability to be sexy, the entire cast are ridiculously talented dancers, musicians and singers – book some tickets and you’ll see what I mean! Magic Mike Live is now booking until April 2020 so plenty of time for you to check it out! I know what you’ll all be asking for at Christmas…!
