The Angel Hotel, Abergavenny | UK WEDDING BLOG

By Laura

Wow what a weekend it has been! As I’m sure you saw from our Instagram Stories, we had a whistle-stop visit to Abergavenny and were treated to a stay at The Angel Hotel. Although we were only there for one night, boy did they spoil us.  The hotel sits in the heart of Abergavenny, a very short distance from the stunning Brecon Beacons, and is a perfect venue for anyone considering becoming newlyweds in the beautiful valleys of South Wales.

We arrived early afternoon on Saturday and as we began our walk from the hotel car park to reception we were stopped by a lovely porter who offered to carry our bags and show us the way. He was actually in the middle of something but he took the time to make sure we knew where we were going and I was instantly impressed by the service the staff were providing. All this when we had barely set foot in the door!

After a quick check-in process, we were given the key to our room and I was so taken aback by the thoughtfulness of the staff at The Angel. We had been given their Deluxe Suite which had a 6ft king bed and separate seating area where we had been left a bottle of Prosecco and fruit platter to enjoy. After I did my usual ‘take a photo of everything’ routine, I noticed hinges on the bed frame at the foot of the bed. I opened it up to discover that there was a TV that ROSE OUT OF THE BED so you can watch all your favourites whilst lying on a lovely comfy bed. The whole room had the feeling of being a special treat and it would be a lovely luxury for your guests if you book rooms for them. Yes, that’s right, this wouldn’t even be the bridal suite if you were to get married here. But more on that later!

Claire the Events Manager showed us around the event spaces and I was pleased to see that the Ballroom where the ceremony and reception would take place is tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the hotel. It is a well-lit, beautifully finished space which you can decorate and style as you wish, and is kitted out with a fully stocked bar and even a terrace for you to enjoy drinks and canapés on if the sun is out. The room comfortably fits up to 120 people for your Wedding Breakfast, going up to 180 for the evening reception. Alternatively, if you’re looking for a smaller space for an intimate ceremony then there are 2 further spaces available.

Something that I really loved is their partnership with the Chapel. This 19th Century church sits in the town centre, a stone’s throw away from the hotel. It has such beautiful stained glass windows, with a real rustic feel, it almost doesn’t need too much decoration because it is so lovely inside already. You can get married there and not have to worry about transport to and from your venue because it is a 5-minute walk away.

Alternatively, if you’re lucky enough to be graced with glorious sunshine on your big day, there is the option to use a section of the grounds at Abergavenny Castle for your reception as it is conveniently across the road from the hotel! The views are incredible and Claire tells me that they have a vintage VW van which they set up as a drinks station.  Also in the grounds of the Castle is the hotel’s bridal suite, The Lodge, and trust me when I say that it has the most breath-taking views of the Brecon Beacons!

The Angel were kind enough to offer us dinner at The Oak Room where we had a lovely 3 course meal while a pianist accompanied the evening. There was a great atmosphere and it is clearly a popular choice for a special meal. We didn’t choose it, but the Crepe Suzette is a real spectacle as it is made table side.

If I had one slight grievance it was that our room overlooked the high street which during the day granted us handsome views of the valleys but in the evening it was a bit noisy from people enjoying their Saturday evening. The bed was so comfy that I fell asleep pretty quickly so it wasn’t too much of an issue.

Our stay came to an end, and on the Sunday morning we enjoyed a delicious hot breakfast although the option for a continental alternative was beautifully displayed too. One thing I must mention is that all the bread and pastries that you are offered at your stay are made at The Angel Bakery, a small shop just around the corner where all these delights are baked fresh daily.

{Our stay and dinner at The Angel Hotel were kindly gifted but all opinions are 100% my own}
