Shangri La in the Maldives

It’s that time of year again. Cold and dark when you wake up in the mornings, the shorter days, the fading of your summer tan and the lusting for some warm sunshine again. I know that the wanderlust for me is kicking in already and some of you may have a honeymoon to plan for next year! So today I thought I’d share with you some ideas for getting away next year. Where’s hot, what’s new and where we’re lusting over. You can see last year’s guide here which still stands and our Where to Go and When honeymoon guide here.

In the tropics. If you want heat with culture then try South East Asia for an adventure.

  • Vietnam is shaping up to be one of the hottest destinations for 2017, with a host of new, luxury openings on its beautiful beaches. One of which is The Anam which opened just last month. Located on Northern Cam Ranh Peninsula this new property is an independently operated and luxurious all-villa five-star resort set on its own private beach close to Nha Trang. I visited Vietnam on a gap year travelling and it’s definitely somewhere that should be on everyone’s bucket list.
  • When visiting Vietnam, you could combine it with Cambodia like we did. You’ll get a real mix of culture, temples, monks, amazing food and scenery. There’s a new villa hotel opening next spring time, a five star eco resort on a private island archipelago just off the coast of Cambodia with white sand beaches and tropical forests.

  • India looks incredible for a cultural trip which you could always combine with something beachy if you wanted to. Sri Lanka and The Maldives are nearby and easy to connect to. In Jaipur, India the Alila Fort Bishangarh – a brand new hotel will open in February in which you can stay in a restored beautiful 230 year old Indian fortress. It will be an all suite resort with a spa, pool terrace, wine cellar and library.

  • If you want something more flip and flop..  The Seychelles are on our list for the ultimate castaway island honeymoon. Look at these beaches! There are three resorts out there that we love the look of. The Seychelles Northolme Resort has villas on stilts looking out onto the ocean with infinity pools. For the classic beach frontage with large boulders, lush tropical jungle and mountain views look at The Double Tree Alamanda.  And for a resort situated in a marine national park with white sandy beaches and crystal clear water look at The Hilton Seychelles Labriz. Doesn’t this look incredible..

We’re actually visiting ourselves in a few weeks so can’t wait to tell you more about them all!

  • A lot of people love the idea of the Maldives for an out of this world kind of trip but get put off by the tiny islands they think they’ll go stir crazy on. For the best of both worlds, have a look at Shangri La’s Villingili Resort which is larger, and has a lot more space, than most! It’s three km long and even has a nine hole golf course. Villas are both on the beach and over the water and every guest gets a bicycle to get around. You won’t find that on your typical Maldivian island.

  • Serendipitously, it’s become a lot easier to combine a trip to The Maldives with Sri Lanka with a new direct flight route launching between Colombo and Gan {the nearest airport to Shangri-La Maldives} on 1st December this year. It would be for those wanting something more than just beaches, enabling an adventurous safari trip in South Sri Lanka with Shangri La’s Hambantota Resort & Spa and then being whisked to Villingili as we talked about above for a very different kind of safari – an underwater one!

We can’t talk about The Maldives and The Seychelles without mentioning Mauritius. To me these three destinations are the holy trinity of honeymoon heaven in the Indian Ocean. All very paradise island but with such a different feel about each of them.

  • You may remember us talking about Shangri La’s Le Touessrok Resort & Spa last year which reopened after a huge refurb. They’ve since started offering the ultimate honeymoon package when staying in one of the iconic Beach villas above.. access to the Dom Pérignon Butler Experience. A dedicated butler available to serve champagne to guests, anytime and anywhere! You’ll be greeted upon arrival by your champagne butler who will then be on hand throughout your stay around the clock and up to 5 bottles a day. You’ll need the speciality bites on offer to compliment it, including cold poached lobster. I mean, talk about luxury. If you can’t splurge on your honeymoon then when can you?

Away from the Indian Ocean if you want overwater villas combined with the relaxed vibe of the Caribbean..

  • Sandals {our Caribbean luxury all included favourites, see this and this} have brand new over water, private butler bungalows which look insane! Located at the Royal Caribbean resort in Jamaica, these look like a honeymoon dream with glass floors to look underwater, private outdoor tubs and hammocks over the ocean. It looks like Bora Bora and saves flying to the other side of the world. Find out more here {and take us with you!!}

  • Have you considered Miami? This year The Confidante hotel opened. A playful oceanfront oasis in Miami’s vibrant glamour neighbourhood. It has both the sophistication of the past but modern day amenities. There’s a 1950s inspired design to reflect Miami Beach’s golden era. There are two heated swimming pools with private cabanas and bungalows and a full-service beach area. Even an open-air rooftop spa! Miami is warm year round and would make for a great winter escape from the cold and grey UK days.

  • We can’t forget Mexico. Places like Tulum, Cabo and Isla Holbox out there are firmly on my bucket list. There’s also a brand new luxury, all inclusive opening in Los Cabos, an area famed for rugged mountains, unspoiled beaches and some of the world’s best whale watching opportunities. Have a look at Grand Velas opening in December with it’s 360 degree ocean view suites.
  • If you’re the type of those couple who like to stay active, and even git fit, on holiday, try the Hilton Dalaman Sarigerme Resort & Spa as the ultimate health and wellbeing destination. Maybe instead of the honeymoon/minimoon we need to start a trend for a pre-wedding get away? This would be perfect for making sure you feel at your best before your wedding with a luxury spa, mud baths, tennis courts, ten swimming pools and a state of the art gym. The hotel is also a perfect base from which to enjoy hiking, biking and horse riding in the mountains, and water activities including sailing, swimming and kayaking from the private beach with crystal clear water. You’d come back completely stress free!

If Europe is more your thing..

  • Tuscany is a great option for honeymooners looking for a romantic but short-haul option with the stunning rolling landscape and array of great Italian cities to explore such as Florence, Sienna and Pisa. Right in the heart of the Chianti wine region (what’s not to love?..) is the 12th century castle and Luxury Hotel and Spa, Castello Del Nero. The Hotel offers modern luxury while still retaining the traditional charm of Tuscany and with free shuttle services to Florence and Sienna, it’s easy to indulge in some city sightseeing whilst having a country fairy-tale bolthole.

  • Also in Italy, on Lake Como there’s a new Mr & Mrs Smith Hotel which opened just last month! Every suite at the new Il Sereno has a lake view and there’s this infinity pool right on the lake. Dreamy. You could combine this with so many places, Venice or Tuscany would be ideal location wise.

  • In the Greek Islands.. Rocabella in Mykonos looks like white washed, blue sky perfection with windmills and pretty white towns overlooking the sea. There’s also a brand new opening there called Kensho with quirky, on trend interiors just a one minute walk away from the beach.

  • For a honeymoon spa trip like no other overlooking the cliffs, The Scarlet is still our top pick for Cornwall if you want beaches combined with rolling countryside which would be pretty year round. Remember this piece? It’s adults only which is a bonus for those looking to get away from kiddos.
  • Also on our list is the Scarlet’s sister next door. Bedruthan is a multi award-winning hotel and spa set in the cliffs above Mawgan Porth Beach on the North Cornish coast. It’s just opened a brand new sensory spa garden {with seven unique stages designed to detox and renew your body} with spectacular sea views. You could combine the two and stay one night at each, or stay at one and go next door for dinner and a change of scene.
  • If you want rustic beach chic with incredible food, that you can also take your dog to, try The Gallivant. They have a newly opened beach hut spa! See our posts here and here.
  • For self-catering and cottages you’d want to move into, Unique Home stays has some unbelievable properties that you can stay in and pretend you live there for a long weekend or week away. There’s everything from this Cotswolds chocolate box style mini manor house with twin rolltop baths {!!} to this rustic romantic cabin in rural Suffolk. You’ll get a luxury food hamper on arrival. Find out more with www.uniquehomestays.com +44(0) 1637 881183. My husband and I have actually booked a stay in Seraphina in Cornwall next year.
