In the spirit of last week’s affordable makeup brand post, I was sent some bits to try from Glo & Ray* and have been super impressed with the results, so I thought I would share some thoughts and use them to create a wearable every day makeup look.
Glo & Ray are a British brand which draw their inspiration from radiance and light, and their ethos is to create wearable products which enhance a woman’s best features. This sits between high end and drug store price wise – lipsticks are £12, eyeliners £9 and bases from £15. Here’s the look using ~ the CC Foundation in shade 20, Mariposa eyeshadow quad in Twilight Nude, Lumincent setting pressed powder, Eternity lasting eye liner in Redtsingy (top), lasting silky liner in Champagne Pink (waterline), creamy shimmer lip colour in Scandal, and hydrating lip gloss in Flamingo Dance. Brows, mascara and blush are my own.
CC Foundation ~ I love love love this! I am genuinely so impressed because this kind of formula I would never usually look at – it’s so hydrating which usually makes me think 1. it isn’t going to cover, and 2. it’s not going to last the day. But this does both – offers awesome coverage in a natural, comfortable way and lasts 8 hours if powdered and set. It is illuminating – it has brightening particles in (apparently “Micro-shine Particles, which disguise pores and naturally brighten skin tone” – although shine is an off putting description!), which again I usually avoid as my pores aren’t tiny and irridescence can enhance that but this just looks naturally radiant. If I had to compare it to a product I’d tried I’d say it’s similar to Bare Minerals Complexion Rescue, but just edges out of the tinted moisturiser bracket into foundation, which is perfect if you like a decent coverage. I’m surprised there are only three shades (and all light – medium by the looks of it), but I’m guessing (I’d hope!) more may follow in the future? I got a better result when I set it with Bare Minerals Mineral Veil than with the Setting Pressed Powder in terms of wear and shine coming through, but for a dry or non oily/combination skin the setting powder has a nice brightening finish, again with some slight iridescence.
These colours are super pretty! All shimmer (I’ve added a nude matte as I’d never usually do shimmer on lid, in crease and as a highlight) you’ve got a champagne, bronze, lemon white and rose shades. I also used this as a highlighter on my cheekbones with a fan brush. Good pigment, easily blendable and pretty for everyday wear – my only bugbear would be that as far as pallettes go I’d usually want one matte colour, but beyond that I can imagine using this for a pretty daytime look. Really impressed with the Eternity long lasting eyeliner – it stays put extremely well, and took makeup removed to get it off the back of my hand after washing it a few times! It’s also pretty creamy so I used an eyeliner brush with it to get a sharper flick, which I like to do with soft pencils. Retractable for ease of use, and I’d definitely be up for seeing how the black fares.
The lipstick formula is creamy with a great pigment content and feels moisture rich on the lips. If I’m honest, I wouldn’t have chosen this colour on myself with the shimmer as there is quite a high shimmer content, but as you can see it looks pretty on photos. The additional of the gloss, which is a baby pink with a gold shimmer meant they sat well together but overall it was more iridescent than I’d usually choose. But individually, lovely – and the formulas feel great. The wear of the lipstick was good too – there was remnants of colour on my lips 5 or 6 hours afterwards.
My hero products of this selection are definitely the CC foundation and the long wear eyeliner – I’m really impressed with both of these and I think as a brand Glo & Ray seem to have some great affordable products, with sleek packaging and results driven formulas, although they are currently a little lacking in base shade range. You can buy online, or at Beauty Mart at Topshop Oxford Street.
* These products were sent to me to try but as with all my posts, I include my totally honest thoughts and feature only products I enjoy and would recommend or use myself.
