Honeymooning in Mauritius

We haven’t talked tropical honeymoons in a while have we? I think it may just be my favourite subject. If you follow me on Instagram you may have seen that I was in the tropical paradise that is Mauritius last week honeymooning. So today I’d love to tell you about my favourite new travel agent Susie Freeman and give you some inspiration for your own Mauritian honeymoon with our stay at Constance Le Prince Maurice.

Ben and I had been to Mauritius a few years back {post here} and were looking for a spring tropical getaway for a bonus late second honeymoon {there’s no rules on the number of honeymoons you can take in your first year of marriage, right?!} in which Mauritius fitted the bill perfectly. The value for the true quality and incredible service that you get from luxurious resorts in Mauritius really cannot be matched by the Caribbean, Seychelles or the like. I started my research for hotels on TripAdvisor and the same name kept coming up in reviews – Susie Freeman Travel. Guests had written that they would never book with anyone else again as they were treated so well. ‘If you book with Susie it’s like whispering a magic password to your hotel to unlock service and special extras you hadn’t imagined was possible’ said a reviewer.

So of course I had to give her a call, she’s a specialist for the Indian Ocean, Mauritius in particular. I explained what we were looking for, a week of relaxation with a beautiful beach, good food and asked about some of the hotels I’d been looking at. Unlike other travel agents who give vague descriptions or stories of colleagues visiting the properties in question, Susie knows all of her hotels inside and out and has stayed at them all many times before. She also has incredible relationships with the General Managers of each of the hotels. She’s been to Mauritius over eighty times. So I trusted her judgement on where we should stay and crucially her prices are incredibly competitive often securing the very best deals because of her relationship with resorts. We had no question of booking our trip through Susie and she arranged everything from flights to transfers all included in the price. Booking a honeymoon will probably be the most special trip you’ll ever take so you want to make sure that you trust your agent. Susie gives you an emergency card with both her home and mobile phone numbers on to call at whatever time of night if you have any questions or worries at all, now that is service. On arrival we were given a beach bag and wine from Susie and had champagne and macaroons waiting for us in our room from the hotel, lovely little touches to start the week off with!

As for our stay at Constance Le Prince Maurice, an award winning and leading hotel of the world we really were in paradise and my husband agreed that it was definitely one of the best places we’ve ever stayed. And if you’ve been following any of my travel posts for a while now you’ll see that we love to travel. We stayed at Baros in the Maldives last year which I really believed was always going to be untouchable in terms of our favourite holiday but I think last week may have just topped it!

The resort itself is stunning. Big enough with two swimming pools, a long beautiful beach, a top spa, three restaurants and three bars {and the biggest wine cellar on the island!}, one of which floats over a lagoon, so there’s no chance of getting cabin fever but it still feels intimate. The hotel was fully booked during our stay but we never found it crowded, a feat of good design everything has been well thought out.

There are three different types of rooms to choose from. We had a junior suite with views over the lagoon and the sunset but the stilted lagoon villas looked romantic and private and the beach bungalows have private pools.

I’ll let the photos do the talking for the beach and swimming pools, true paradise. {and call me a snob but one thing I always judge a resort on us the quality and thickness of sun beds. These were the thickest cushions I’ve ever seen and you won’t find any plastic within a mile of Constance}

We soaked up the sun drinking from coconuts laying under Palm trees everyday before going for a swim in the sea. It really was dreamy and I had to keep taking photos.

The gardens were all beautifully planted with tropical flowers and lush greenery, everything so well manicured.

The food really deserves a mention, the breakfast buffet had everything you could wish for with a fruit chef, egg chef and waffle/crepe chef and every night for dinner felt like we were in a top fine dining London restaurant. I was impressed with the healthy options available too and the copious amounts of fresh fish and sushi. Make sure you have the coconut sorbet for me if you go. As part of our package we were upgraded from half to full board so ordered lunch on the beach everyday without having to leave our sun lounger {just put the flag up for service!}.

Having a French heritage, Mauritians really know their cooking. The bread, pastries and desserts are all exceptionally good.

My favourite place for dinner was Barachois, the floating restaurant over the lagoon where you can watch the fish swim past before walking back along the boardwalk under twinkly stars. Magical. On our last night we ate bbqed lobster by candlelight on the beach.

When the sun went down, the sky turned pink every evening {despite being on the East coast, Le Prince Maurice’s location on a peninsula means that you still get to see the sunset which is a bonus}.

And then when it got dark, the rest of the resort just shone. I loved the lighting from everywhere from the lobby to the pool and the beach. My favourite was the giant urns full of floating candles.

When I was reading reviews on TripAdvisor before our stay the incredible service was something that was mentioned time and time again. I thought that it couldn’t be as good as people made out but it truly was. You see the same staff everyday who all remember your name and preferences. They were all so fantastic and try and go the extra mile for you. Every day they will offer to clean your sunglasses by the pool or bring you water or fresh fruit on the beach before you even request it.

There are complimentary water sports on offer, a daily glass bottom boat trip, excursions and remarkably free unlimited golf at two championship courses with unlimited green fees, free clubs and the like!

Despite all of this we were incredibly lazy for the week but it’s nice to have the option. We did take the shuttle one day to the sister resort Constance Belle Mare Plage just around the bay for a morning at a different beach, the water was beautiful there.

With our honeymoon package we had £100 resort credit per suite per day which could be used on drinks or spa treatments. We booked five couples massages at the Conde Nast award winning U Spa by Constance and reached a stage of relaxation we never thought was possible.

The only slight niggle that I did have with the resort was the occasional clash between the honeymoon couples ethos of the hotel and the fact that it is super child friendly too. I wasn’t expecting so many, sometimes noisy children for such a romantic resort. Most of the time it wasn’t an issue but it’s something to bear in mind. It wouldn’t stop me returning though.

If you do want a completely child free break though or somewhere to twin with Le Prince Maurice you could consider Paradise Cove, a boutique hotel set in an idyllic sheltered cove in the North of the island. It’s focus is solely on couples. We took a visit up to the resort for lunch one day last week and found it to be a super romantic intimate resort perfect for honeymooners. There are four restaurants with gorgeous views and two infinity pools with love nests scattered around the waters edge for total privacy.

On our way back to Constance we stopped at Grand Baie, these photos are hashtag no filter. I got obsessed with the colour of the water out in Mauritius, stunning.

We really had the best week ever and I’ve got serious holiday blues now! It was my first time staying in a Constance resort but already I’m researching their other properties for future holidays. They would make for fantastic destination wedding locations too and if you fancy winning your dream wedding, worth over £10,000 in the Seychelles {another tropical Indian ocean paradise that I’m desperate to visit}, you can enter here. You just need to create a Pinterest board and enter via Facebook. All details are listed and it says the competition ended on the 16th but it’s been extended until the end of May so go get pinning this weekend!

You can find more details of Constance Resorts here.

And Paradise Cove here.

And if you’re planning your honeymoon, or a pre-wedding relaxing escape then I really can’t talk highly enough of Susie Freeman Travel. Go give her a call, she’s lovely.

Enjoy the bank holiday and I’ll be back talking honeymoons again soon, any places on your list that you want me to research for you?
