Supplier Spotlight…James Melia

As soon as I saw James’s photos I had to ask him if he would be on the blog. He has excellent and original talent. I later realised that he is close by in Huddersfield AND he has just got a puppy brilliantly named Chief. Naturally, I asked if I could have him…I’m still waiting. I’ve asked a few photographers the same questions, and so far none have answered the “What advice would you give to a nervous bride?” question the same way which I think is so helpful to brides as they get different perspectives on the day. My photographer made me feel utterly relaxed, he was in total control and I just stood and  looked (questionably) breath-taking.

Business background: how long you have been taking photos, been part of the wedding industry, what you offer as a business package, what’s your style?
I have been taking photographs almost all my life and I have been capturing people for the last 4 years. The wedding industry has become incredibly fashionable and is an exciting area to work in. Capturing that one day for people to remember is so important and not to be taken lightly.
What I have really enjoyed so far about my wedding photography journey is without doubt getting to know the couple and helping them to create their beautiful wedding album. Time seems to slow right down at a wedding and capturing those little moments throughout the day is such a great honour to be part of.
My wedding packages start from £1,595, which includes a pre wedding shoot and the wedding day – from the bride and groom getting ready through to the first dance. All images are then selected in a private viewing and will be presented in the finest handmade leather album.
All the products which I use, whether albums, frames or canvasses I use because they are the best and are of the highest quality.

Whats the most fantastic place that you have had the opportunity to photograph (Canada and S.A must have been pretty amazing)
As the saying goes – you don’t realize what you have until it’s gone. When I lived in South Africa I worked along side a top fashion photographer and worked in some of the most beautiful places. We would shoot in locations of impressively big, all white beachfront properties with the sound of the ocean in the background, or we’d be standing in the middle of a game park with giraffe wandering around in the background. So when it came to my photography I was really spoilt for choice. South Africa is such a beautiful place, I think everyone should go there at least once in their life but then again I am a little biased as my fiancée is from there.

Advice for nervous brides about having their photo taken all day?

Before the wedding I normally shoot a pre wedding or an engagement shoot. It has really helped as it lets me get to know the bride and groom and find out what they like and don’t like. So when it comes to the wedding day they’re usually more at ease with the camera and I’ve got to know them a little better. But everyone takes a good photo – they just don’t know how to pose comfortably. There are certain tricks and body positions that really help get a really flattering look – like taking an image from above the person can make the eyes look more inviting and soulful.
A pre wedding shoot is always a great idea as it gives you the chance to get to know your photographer and vice versa. This makes the wedding day itself a lot more relaxed as you know what to expect.
Work with your photographer. They are there to capture all the moments that will pass you by. The right photographer will help you to pace the day and keep it relaxed ensuring all those important memories are captured and cherished forever.

But it is always great when someone is convinced that they don’t take a good photo and when they see the results they are a little overwhelmed. Plus I love a challenge!
